A Brother Knight and Football Legend
Don Horn, QB (NFL Retired) and Knight
Don Horn quarterbacked the National Champion San Diego State University football champions. He was a first-round NFL draft by the legendary VInce Lombardi and played for the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl II and the incomparable "Ice Bowl" (-15 degrees). Don was also inducted into the GridIron Greats and California Sports Hall of Fame.
But one of his most cherished experiences is his journey with and membership in the KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS. Don is a member of Fort Collins' Council #12145.
Don was once asked, "If you played for Coach Lombardi who was a 4th Degree Knight as well as your father-in-law being a 4th Degree Knight....why is it you didn't join the K of C until you were in your late 60s?"
His reply, "Because nobody asked me."
Don has said that he learned many things from Coach Lombardi but one of the most vital ones was priority. Practice in Green Bay never began until Vince had returned to the field after attending daily mass. This was "Lesson 1" for Don and the team. Lesson 2 was one of Vince's most famous statements: "Get your life in order and established your priorities. God is #1, Family is #2, and Football is #3".
As Don has said, the #3 priority will vary with the events in a person's life but he will never forget what Coach taught and how Priority #1 and Priority #2 establishes a pattern of success in life.
Don will also advise all Catholic men to make joining the Knights of Columbus and serving families, communities, your parish, and those with special needs a priority in life as well.
